Early Settlers
Settlement of Rutherford County began in the early 1800’s. The total population of Rutherford County in 1810 was 10,265. Our pioneer ancestor, Ezekiel Murphy, the son of Miles Murphy of Rockingham County, NC was an early settler to Rutherford County, TN. He migrated from North Carolina to Rutherford County, TN prior to 1808 with his brothers, Miles and Nathaniel, his first wife Martha (Smith) and son, John. He settled in the western part of the county, south of Highway 96 (Franklin Road), in an area that would later be identified as Districts 8 and 12. Ezekiel and Martha had at least 3 other children, Annie, William Wayne and Caroline. Martha died around 1830.
Ezekiel remarried in 1835 to Louisa Jones (maiden name Parish) the widow of Lewellan Jones in 1835. Their children included Harrison Gaines Murphy, Samuel Houston Murphy, Lousia Victoria Murphy (married Frances Snell), Ezekiel “Ike” Murphy. Harrison and Samuel moved to Texas after1880.
Ezekiel’s first son John, married Elizabeth Parish in 1839. They gave birth to James Knox Polk Murphy (“Polk”), George Mifflin Dallas Murphy, Martha Caroline Murphy, William Wayne Murphy, Sallie Murphy and another unidentified daughter. John and Family lived in the Fosterville District eventually moving back to District 8 before 1860.
